Designer Tips (Wallpaper on Textured Walls)
One of the most common questions I’m asked is whether it’s possible to install wallpaper on textured walls.
The short answer is yes, it’s possible. However, the final result completely depends on the type of material you use.
If the wall has a noticeable texture, the best option is wallpaper with a thick base and its own surface pattern. This includes textured vinyl, commercial vinyl with a canvas or fabric backing, as well as natural materials such as grasscloth, abaca, raffia, and cork. These coverings work well on uneven surfaces, provide a clean visual result, and do not highlight wall imperfections.
I generally do not recommend using peel-and-stick wallpaper on textured walls. Over time, it may start to come off. If peel-and-stick wallpaper has already been purchased, I can install it using adhesive, the same way as traditional wallpaper. However, it’s important to understand that the wall texture will still be visible, especially if the material is thin or has a glossy finish. In rare cases, thin wallpaper can work, but only if the pattern is busy enough to hide the uneven structure.
The main principle is simple: the wallpaper should be thick enough and have its own texture. This minimizes the visibility of wall imperfections and ensures a clean final look.
